There continues to be an increased focus on maternal mortality and morbidity (MMM) in Texas. Through examination of best practices and programs that have reduced rates of the most preventable and leading causes of MMM, Texas identified the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Program as the most promising approach.
TexasAIM was launched in June 2018. It is a partnership between DSHS, the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM), and the Texas Hospital Association to support Texas hospitals in adopting AIM-endorsed maternal safety bundles, starting with the Obstetric Hemorrhage Bundle.
TexasAIM exceeded initial goals for engagement and participation of hospitals. As of May 2019, Texas recruited 212 hospitals to participate in the Obstetric Hemorrhage Bundle. These hospitals represent more than 93% of all hospitals with obstetric services in Texas, approximately 95% of the state births, and 9.7% of the national births.
TexasAIM is making a huge impact. Participation in the first in-person learning collaborative meetings exceeded 600 people, and 250 participants regularly join the monthly action period calls. Also, more than 80% of the hospitals are reporting their quarterly performance measures into the TexasAIM portal.
TexasAIM continues to build the infrastructure and partnerships needed to expand. One death of a mother is one death too many, and Texas will continue to make MMM a top priority so all Texas mothers and babies have optimal health outcomes.
